As Hollywood prepares itself to dazzle millions of people with some more of that good old Oscar glamour, the US girls on GSM also prepare ourselves in the latest designer competition called "Design an Oscar Gown". If you would like to enter but still need some inspiration then you might want to keep reading here.

There are many different shapes to experiment with to create a gorgeous dress or gown. Here are a few ideas:

The empire cut dress has a high waistline often starting beneath the bust with a long full skirt that flows straight from the waistline.

The A-line dress has a form-fitted bodice that flares out from the waistline into a full skirt. This type of dress features a seamless waist and is often called the princess-cut.

The sheath cut is a slim dress with fabric detail that hugs curves the silhouette of the body. The sheath is perfect for sleeveless styles. Sheath dresses have a beautiful and graceful look.

The bouffant dress is characterized by a sheer, puffed-out skirt often made from stiffened rayon or silk. The skirt of this type of dress is similar in fabric construction to a ballerina tutu. Here is one with a bustle.

The ball gown is characterized by a very full skirt that begins at the natural waist and proceeds to floor length. The waist is seamed and may be styled in various shapes and designs.

The high-low dress is a cut that is hemmed long in the back at the ankles or to the floor and just above the knees in the front.
